Activision confirms: Modern Warfare 4 not for PS4 or Xbox One

1 June 2026

Good and not-so-good news for the fans of Call of Duty, one of the most popular international esports titles in recent history. The good news is that developer Activision has finally announced a release date for COD: Modern Warfare 4, namely Friday, October 23, 2026. The not-so-good news is particularly not-so-good for those playing on older consoles, as Activision has announced as well that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not be playable on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Instead, the game will only be available on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S.

First for Call of Duty

Even though rumors about the Modern Warfare 4 release date and its exclusivity for the latest consoles had been going around for a while, it still came as a bit of shock to part of the community. October 23rd, after all, will now mark the first time in the PlayStation 5 and XBOX era that a new Call of Duty instalment will not be playable on older-generation consoles as well. While expected by some, Activision did not comment further on this decision.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

As usual, we will bring you all updates regarding Modern Warfare 4 as we get closer to October 23rd, so for now just a reminder of what is to come. The single-player campaign sees a lot of familiar faces return to action after all, including Captain John Price, Simon “Ghost” Riley and Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, as well as crime kingpin and drug baroness Valeria Garza. The surroundings will be entirely new though, with the majority of Modern Warfare 4 taking place in South and North Korea. The setting is a renewed conflict between the two parts evokes the real-world Korean War from the fifties.

Improved movement

While announcing the official release date, Activision also lifted the curtain on some of the improvements and changes to the game. This includes an improved and expanded movement system. In Modern Warfare 4, for example players will be able to go from sliding tot lying low in one smooth movement, while climbing pipes has also been added to the mix. The vaulting move has also been improved, so that players can skip the animation if they want to.

Gunny

For a complete overview of all of the new stuff that Modern Warfare 4 will have to offer, you should check out the previews and promo videos that have been released so far. One of the additions we still want to mention though, is Gunny. That is the name of the new AI assistant that has been integrated into Gunsmith, the COD system that helps players customize guns to their particular preferences. By integrating AI, the idea is for the system to learn from the player’s playing style and preferences, and to propose gun customizations based on that data.
