Team Spirit dominate PGL Astana, lose just ONE map
19 May 2026
Whoever thought the PGL Astana 2026 was going to be a tightly contested affair must not have been aware of Team Spirit’s current form. Or perhaps it is their determination. In any case, the Belgrade-based international esports organization turned up in the best version of themselves in Kazakhstan, where the sixteen best Counter-Strike 2 teams in the world competed for a share of the $ 800.000 prize pool. Not only did Team Spirit take first place and $ 256.000 in prize money, but they did so while losing just a single map throughout their entire run.
PGL Astana 2026
PGL Astana 2026 got started with its Group Stage on Saturday, May 9th, at the Barys Arena, smack in the center of Astana. During roughly two weeks, the sixteen best Counter-Strike 2 teams in the world faced each other at one of the season’s most anticipated events. Tournament organizer PGL had reserved no less than $ 800.000 in prize money for the Astana showdown, of which eventual champions Team Spirit would end up taking the biggest chunk.
One lost map
The European esports organization won three out of three Group Stage games (against The Huns Sports, The MongolZ and FURIA Esports) for a perfect 3-0 score. They only had to concede one map during that run, against FURIA om May 11th. Spirit started strong with an 8-13 victory on Dust II before falling to the Brazilians 16-12 on Overpass. They then finished the job on Mirage with a tight but deserved 11-13 victory. That lost map in the second round against FURIA would eventually turn out to be the only map Team Spirit went on to lose during PGL Astana 2026.
Despite going unbeaten in the Group Stage, Spirit had to be content with second place, as the Argentinian organization 9z Team took the top spot. They beat PARIVISION (2:0), Team Falcons (2:1) and MOUZ (2:1) for a tie with Spirit. Seeing as 9z Team’s BU-score was higher (2 versus Spirit’s -1), the South Americans finished first with Team Spirit right behind them.
Playoffs
What followed was the playoff stage and Team Spirit was really picking up steam by that point. They faced G2 Esports in the Quarterfinals, who were quickly eliminated (0:2), after having lost to MOUZ (1:2) and The MongolZ (0:2) earlier in the Group Stage. Spirit then went on to kick out MOUZ in the semifinals of the Playoff Stage with the same numbers. The Germans had no chance, amassing just 5 points over two maps (3-13 on Dust II, 2-13 on Nuke).
What remained at that moment was the Grand Final, which was going to be between Team Spirit and Team Falcons, from Saudi Arabia. Even though the latter put up a more than decent fight, they were simply no match for Spirit. Not even the Grand Final’s best-of-5 format led to them losing another map: 12-16 on Dust II, 7-13 on Mirage and 10-13 on Ancient. That resounding 0:3 victory kept their total of lost maps at PGL Astana 2026 to just one and earned them $ 256.000 in prize money. Runner-up Team Falcons took home $ 120.000, while number three MOUZ made $ 96.000.
